Voile Objective 2017 - 2016 Review by A Better Ski
2016-17 Voile Objective Review by A Better Ski
The Voile Objective is inspired by rando race skis but built up enough to provide durability and skiablity. Paulownia core and a double carbon wrap provide a lightweight ski with torsional stiffness.
2016-17 Voile Objective Ski Review
Size: 178
Shape: 117-84-102
Turning Radius: 19.5m
Weight: 1135g
Days: 1
Riders: Chris
Conditions: Dense Powder, Chop
Boots: Scarpa Maestrale RS
Bindings: Dynafit Radical ST 2.0
Ski Personality: The Voile Objective is an uphill oriented ski that is designed to be brought over long distances, and it doesn’t pretend to be much else.
On the Snow Feel: A serious no frills ride with lots of traditional camber and a wood core create a lively ride. The Objective skis really naturally as long as you are in predictable conditions.
Turn Initiation and Carving: At 84mm underfoot, the Voile Objective had east turn initiation and was really quick from edge to edge. A slightly turned up tail did give a locked in feel, but did allow you to release the turn and slide the ski when you needed to blow off a little speed. A reasonable 19.5m turning radius kept short swing turns fun and playful.
Speed: Not exactly confidence inspiring at high speeds due to the lack of mass and skiable length. The 178cm did ski short thanks to the generous rockered tip and make the objective fun to ski through tight trees.
Powder: Short skinny skis, not exactly designed for deep snow. Can you ski them? Sure. Are you going to wish you had more ski? Yes.
Uneven/Variable Terrain: Rockered tip and early rise tail allow you to release without much difficulty, but narrow width does make the ski catchy though chop and debris keeping you on your toes.
Touring: The Voile Objective’s feather-weight is a joy to walk with for long periods on your feet or back. Camber helps keep some pep in your step with additional “spring” underfoot. Long tours with a lot of milage or vert will fit the bill nicely for this ski.
Overall: The Voile Objective will be a good fit for the skier that sets out for long days of climbing or traveling in the backcountry. A good fit for spring corn snow skiing and mountaineering, and may even cross over onto resort for some east coasters. Powder hounds are going to want more ski then this and taller skiers may find it hard to fit into a short skiing 178cm.
