Head Kore 93 2018 - 2017 Review by A Better Ski

Head Kore 93 2017-18 Review by A Better Ski

If you’ve ever skied Head skis, you know what to expect before strapping them on your feet, energetic, confident, stable, damp.  Head’s Kore 93 is no different, except for one KEY factor…it weighs a mere 1600 grams.  The lightweight powerful ski market is becoming saturated with excellent options, and we LOVE it.

Head Kore 93 Ski Review and Video

Size:  180cm

Shape: 133-93-115

Radius: 16.4m

Days: 1

Riders: Chris

Conditions: Hard Pack, Trees, Bumps, Crud

Boots: Salomon X-Max 120

Ski Personality: The Head Kore 93 still has the refined feeling that we’ve come to love from head.  Power and performance at 1600g…now your speaking my language!

On the Snow Feel: Locked in, confident and damp make this ski a blast to ski hard, even in cold hard conditions.  It will have you skiing well above your normal pace, just be careful, it doesn’t have the weight as things get dicey and may bounce around a bit.

Turn Initiation and Carving: I was pleasantly surprised in how nimble the Head Kore 3 was!  For a ski that mostly flat underfoot with a turned up tail and early rise tip, it was super quick and playful from edge to edge and a blast through the tight areas of the mountain.  The tail releases really nicely allowing you to slash and slarve through dicey terrain.  Once on groomers though, the ski allowed you to finish the turn, and returned energy back to the skier, rewarding a more traditional skier.  This ski is not nearly as demanding at the Blizzard Zero G 95 with its strong flat tail, and wont slap you to the ground if you get off your game.

Speed: The Head Kore 93 is confident, allowing the skier to really lay this ski over, sometimes even getting you into a bit of trouble if you blast into rough terrain with too much gusto.

Powder:  At 93mm underfoot, this isn’t going to be a powder chasers dream, but it will do OK in a few inches of fresh snow.  Can it be skied in deep snow? Of course! Are there better options? Sure is, even in the Kore line-up.

Uneven/Variable Terrain:  Stable and stiff, the Kore 93 does a nice job through crud, just be aware that this is a lightweight ski and lacks the mass that we like in charging skis.

Trees/Bumps/Tight turns: I thought that the Head Kore really shined as things got tight, quick and snappy through the trees and bumps helped get the ski from edge to edge and the turned up tail released cleanly without too much effort.

Edge Hold:  Torsionally, super stiff, long effective edge and strong material underfoot help this one keep you locked in.   The dampness of this lightweight carver helps keep the Kore 93 on track as well.  Overall, really fun on the frontside and I could see this underfoot of a traditional skier that demands solid frontside performance.

Flex:  Torsionally, very stiff.  Moderately stiff underfoot and at the tail, the tip does lighten up a touch.

Intended User: East coaster, that is looking for a backcountry ski that still wants hard snow performance and enough ski to get them through soft snow.  Could also be for a front side skier that really wants a light weight ski.

Overall: Head crushed it with this offering into the touring marketplace, a we love light, strong, and confident skis.  We used to say that having downhill performance was a tradeoff with weight…not so much anymore.  Ski construction and materials are advancing rapidly, giving skis less compromise.  The Head Kore 93 is just that, great downhill performance in a lightweight package.  This ski will have you looking for the tightest patch of trees on the mountain.
