Atomic Backland FR 102 W 2017 - 2016 Review by A Better Ski

The Atomic Backland FR 102 W is a really fun and light-weight ski that could be used at the resort or in the backcountry. It’s a ski that is very fun and maneuverable in soft snow, and yet can charge pretty hard on groomed terrain.

Atomic Backland FR 102 W On-Mountain Video Ski Review

Size: 172cm

Days: 1

Riders: Lauren

Conditions: Soft Chop, Groomed, Hard Pack

On the Snow Feel: The Atomic Backland FR 102 W is a light ski that is energetic and playful, but stable and powerful when you want to charge.

Powder: The Atomic Backland FR 102 W is fun and surfy in soft snow. It has a 102mm waist that has pretty solid float for its size. The ski is maneuverable and easy to pivot in deeper snow and does a really good job in all but the deepest snow.

Turn Initiation and Carving: We found the Atomic Backland FR 102 W to be easy to maneuver and easy to get on edge. At the same time there’s a decent amount of power and stability. The ski is fun and energetic and is pretty quick from edge to edge. It was really fun at short to medium radius turns. We were a bit surprised at how stable the ski felt as well, and it did a really good job at long radius turns.

Speed: We wouldn’t call this ski a charger, but for how light these are, the ski is very stable and damp. On edge, the ski feels stable, and was really fun in long radius turns.

Uneven/Variable Terrain: This ski holds up really well in variable snow. It has enough stiffness and stability on edge to cut through soft tracked out snow. At the same time the light weight and playful feel makes it really fun to slash turns in soft variable snow. We wouldn’t call it a charger, but it does a really good job in variable snow given the light weight and softer poppy flex.

Bottom Line: The Atomic Backland FR 102 W is a really versatile ski that could feel at home at the resort or in the backcountry. It has a very fun and poppy feel and with a low swing weight it was easy to maneuver and pivot the ski. At the same time it’s stable and damp on edge, and can be pushed pretty hard.
