Salomon Speed 2016 Review by A Better Ski

The Salomon Speed is a technical insulated ski jacket that would be good for serious skiers who spend a lot of time skiing on colder days at the resort.

Salomon Speed Insulated Ski Jacket Review

Tester: Cindy

Size: M

Waterproofing and Breathability: The Salomon Speed has a 20k/20k waterproof and breathable membrane. In our experience this is pretty solid, and would be good for those who ski in an area that is going to see a fair amount of wet weather. Sure, it’s not Gore-Tex, but it is definitely on the top level for waterproof protection. AdvancedSkin Dry is also a pretty breathable membrane, and is on par with Spyders Xt.L. for best breathablilty in insulated jackets. Sure they still won’t breath like a technical hard shell, but they do at least offer some breathability.

Warmth: The Salomon Speed has 100g of Primaloft Silver insulation. This is a pretty heavy insulation and would be good for colder days on the mountain. If you’re the type of skier that is cold all of the time, you’ll probably need a good mid-layer underneath for really cold days, but I think most people will find this sufficiently warm for most days.

Fit: The Salomon Speed has an active fit and 4 way stretch fabric. The jacket also has a motion fit, which gives the jacket good mobility. Our tester loved the feel of the jacket. The size medium was almost the perfect fit, and even though it is slightly tailored, it feels easy to move around in.

Features: The Salomon Speed is a warm technical shell with all the features that you’ll need for the resort. The Speed has a removable articulating hood that feels comfortable both on and off. The Speed has two wrist gaiters, and a powder skirt to keep snow out of the sleeves and waist. The sleeves are articulated, and with the motion fit, they feel very easy to move. There are lots of pockets on the speed, including 4 outer, and 3 internal pockets. There is plenty of room for gear. The Speed also focuses on the little details, and includes a goggle cloth, and key hook.

Bottom Line: The Salomon Speed is a very solid jacket for resort skiers in need of a moderately warm and technical insulated jacket. It has a very comfortable and function stretch construction for a more tailored fit.
