2018 Descente Challenger jacket Review by A Better Ski
Lets take a look at the Descente Challenger jacket. This is a jacket you would take off the rack for a try if you were looking for a heavy winter jacket to keep you warm in the very low temperatures. It looks warm and serious. It fits well, padded but not super bulky. Lets take a closer look and see what this jacket is all about.

Waterproofing and Breath-ability: The Descente Challenger jacket is constructed with Dermizax 20K membrane which claims to be completely waterproof and highly breath-able. This membrane can compete with Gore-Tex in both of these categories and is a good alternative choice. Scientifically, nothing can be both completely waterproof and breath-able but these pants score high in both categories. They claim to have over 35k breath-ability which will allow your sweat to escape even on the most active of days. Descente Challenger jacket is a good choice for mountaineers and back-country skiers who need a breath-able yet well insulated layer for protection against extreme and cold wintry conditions.
Warmth: The Descente Challenger jacket comes equipped with 3M THINSULATE 100G insulation which is enough to get you through temperatures down into single digits with the appropriate base and mid-layers. Be careful with this one guys if you run hot or live in CA where the temperatures seldom drop into the teens. Even though this jacket has great breath-ability, you will probably find yourself with all the vents and zippers open and still too warm. Go find a 40G. But if you live where it is truly cold, Colorado, Vermont, Main, Chicago, 100G of insulation is great for keeping the cold and moisture out and the warmth in.
Fit: The Descente Challenger jacket feels very much like a heavy duty jacket. It has weight and a bit of bulk and the feel of a tough ski jacket. As with all the Descente line, I like the Motion 3D construction which allows for a slim yet nonrestrictive fit. It has good length in the sleeves and torso. And finally, a hood and collar that fir my helmet and chin comfortably. I don’t know what you did differently on this one Descente, but I like it.
Features: Matte 4-Way Stretch; Dermizax 20K; 20K; 3M THINSULATE 100G; HEAT NAVI; Motion 3D Fit; D-LASER; Powder Skirt; Pit Zips; Media Pocket; Inner Mesh Pockets; Waist, Wrist & Hood Adjuster; Removable Hood; Pass Holder; Waterproof Zips; Lycra Cuffs; Stretch Liner; Full Seam Seal
Bottom Line: If you are in the market for a serious jacket for serious conditions, the Descente Challenger jacket could be your choice. It is warm, almost waterproof, highly breath-able and well constructed with a good fit and classic ski jacket look.
