Look SPX 12 2015
Review by A Better Ski
The Look SPX 12 is a solid high performance all-mountain binding for intermediate to advanced riders. It leads the industry in elastic travel (45mm in toe, 27mm in heel), allowing your boot to travel further before it’s released from the ski. This really helps to reduce premature release, while also helping to increase shock absorption. The Look Full Drive Toe also provides 180 degrees of multi-directional release helping to make sure your boot releases when needed. Despite having the industry leading elastic travel, and great shock absorption, the Look SPX 12 is also a powerful binding. It has sturdy metal construction that feels solid. It also has one of the widest mounting points of any binding on the market, helping to increase power. Also adding to power transmission is the oversized heel pivot that Look is known for. This helps to increase the amount of force the heel piece puts on your boot, and in turn how much force is transferred to the ski. This really helps to increase your control over the ski, and allows you to push it hard. Look reduced the weight of the SPX, but it still feels substantial. The binding has a DIN range of 3.5-12 which is ideal for intermediate to advanced riders. The binding has an upright stance, leading to less fatigue and a bit more balance. Overall the Look SPX 12 is a great all-mountain binding for lighter aggressive skiers that want a lot of shock absorption and power transmission. This is really the best of both worlds, and although there are better bindings for each, the Look SPX 12 does a good job of balancing these two things. I could easily see this becoming a favorite binding of all-mountain skiers. I think it’s enough binding for most resort skiers, and even though the DIN only goes to 12, it would actually hold up pretty well to aggressive skiers.
