The North Face Thermoball 2016 Review by A Better Ski

The North Face Thermoball is a great jacket for the trail on a mild day, or for under your technical shell for a day on the snow.

The North Face Thermoball Mid-Layer Review

Tester: Matt

Size: S

Matt’s Specs: Sizing Info

Waterproofing and Breathability: The North Face Thermoball isn’t going to give you the protection of a technical shell, but it does have a DWR to help repel water from the outer fabric. This is definitely going to be better on dry days, but has the ability to keep you dry if a light snow does catch you off guard.

Warmth: The North Face Thermoball has great warmth to weight ratio. The thin Thermoball insulation is about as warm as a 600 fill down jacket, but it still offers you insulation when wet. This would be fantastic underneath a technical shell, and could probably provide enough warmth for just about every day on the snow.

Fit: The North Face Thermoball has a low profile design that fits really well. It’s kind of a standard fit, and feels pretty true to size. I found the small just about perfect for my size, and even though I didn’t feel restricted, I could easily fit this under a technical shell.

Features: The North Face Thermoball is really all about keeping you warm in a nice low profile fit. It does have an adjustable hem, elastic cuffs, and two hand warming pockets, but really nothing for extra features. It does stow away into its own pocket, which is pretty cool.

Bottom Line: The North Face Thermoball is a great mid-layer for those who want warmth in a low profile. It fits great under a technical shell, and will provide about the same warmth as a 600 fill down jacket. It would also make a great trail/around town jacket for mild days.
