Sportube Ski Shield Double 2016 Review by A Better Ski

The Sportube Ski Shield Double ski bag is about as good as a soft-sided ski bag can get for travel. It has plenty of room for two pairs of skis (up to 190cm length and wide powder skis), my ski poles, and all of the outerwear I’ll need for a trip to the mountains. Best of all, it’s all protected by a soft padding to ensure that it makes it to my destination with all little damage as possible.

Overview: Sportube makes a couple of hard sided cases for protecting your gear while traveling. These hard sided cases are the best way to protect your gear, but if you don’t want a hard case, the Ski Shield Double is the next best thing. The Ski Shield Double ski bag provides a decent amount of protection for your gear. The bag is padded on all sides, and even has a plastic “Gear Shield” on both ends, to give even more protection for your ski tips and tails. Inside the bag, the two skis are separated by another padded “flap” helping to protect your skis and bindings even more. The Sportube Ski Shield Double also has internal and external load straps to help keep your gear from moving around and getting damaged.

Of course protecting your gear is priority one when traveling, but having enough room for all of your gear is just as important. Luckily the Sportube Ski Shield Double has a 113 liter capacity. This means there’s enough room for two pairs of skis, ski poles, outerwear, and probably still some room left over for clothing and personal items. Placing your soft outerwear and clothing in between the skis, and poles helps to protect them even more. If you’d rather everything be a bit more organized there are two large pockets on both sides of the top. For convenience Sportube equipped the Ski Shiled Double ski bag with quite inline wheels, giving you the ability to roll the bag through the airport or to the ski resort. They also built in “Hitchin” tech so that you can attach your compatible Sportube boot bags to the Ski Shield.

So how about durability? Well, Sportube designed the Ski Shield with an 840D polyester ballistic fiber fabric. This is a tough and durable material that will stand up to abuse pretty well. The material is then coated with a water resistant PU to keep the bag, and items inside, from getting wet. All of the seams undergo a double stitch for added durability. If that’s not enough, Sportube puts large heavy duty YKK zippers on the bag, and two large and easy to grab padded handles.

Bottom Line: We could easily recommend the Sportube Ski Shield Double ski bag for those skiers that want a soft sided bag. It makes a great bag for those skiers that can’t decide what pair of skis to bring, or for small family’s that need room for more than one pair of skis. The bag offers a decent amount of protection for a soft sided bag, and plenty of room for the things in your winter gear closet. It does meet Airline check-in requirements, but also works well for throwing in the back of your SUV on the way to the mountains.

Weaknesses: One cotter pin lost by airlines

I bought the double hard sided case. The airlines lost the cotter pin, the only part that keeps this bag from siding apart. What a mess. This is a bad design. It needs another way to keep it closed.
